• Sir Sidney Poitier dies at 94

    Sir Sidney Poitier, the first black man ever to win a best actor Oscar, has died aged 94.
    The Bahamian actor's death has been confirmed by the minister of foreign affairs. His cause of death is not yet known.
    Poitier made history by winning the Academy Award for best actor in 1964 for his role in Lilies of the Field. He was knighted by the Queen in 1974 and awarded a Bafta fellowship in 2016 but could not attend the ceremony because of ill health. A Broadway play about his career was announced last month.
